American Savings Life Insurance Company is a fast-growing life insurance and annuity carrier headquartered in Mesa, AZ. The Company was founded by Frihoff Allen and is today led by his grandson. Our team is small and our culture is hard-working and family-friendly.

The job

This is a new position that reports directly to the CFO. The controller will manage three direct reports, and supervise the team's responsibilities covering the entire accounting function: generating and reviewing financial transactions, accounting policy, A/P, A/R, monthly close, financial statements, statutory filings, and state insurance and tax compliance. As a small company, the controller will both oversee these duties and perform many of the more complex tasks directly.

Our business model and reporting requirements make for a rich mix. We report financial statements on both a GAAP and a statutory basis (the latter specific to the insurance industry), across traditional life and annuity products as well as commercial real estate origination and servicing.

Our growth is both a blessing and a challenge as we need to adapt frequently to changes in the environment and the scale at which we operate. We are also preparing to transition from our in-house accounting software to a modern third-party platform. This provides a unique opportunity for the controller to shape the future of our accounting operations. The controller will play a central role in standing up the new platform and adopting policies and practices to maximize its benefits, including more AI-enabled features.

· A solid working understanding of GAAP accounting principles

Experience with statutory accounting is a plus but not required.

Travel is expected to be minimal.

Minimum qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

· 5-7 years in accounting, with demonstrated continuous improvement and problem-solving skills

· 1-2 years in a supervisory or management role

· CPA license, or actively pursuing one

· Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements and managing a monthly close process

· Proficiency with standard accounting and reporting tools, including advanced Excel skills

· Experience with an ERP (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, etc…)

Experience with an accounting system transition or implementation is a plus.

Hiring process

As things move forward, expect multiple rounds of interviews, including at least one in-person interview at our Mesa, Arizona offices. Interviews will focus on prior experience, skill demonstration, and professional references. The hiring manager (our CFO) will personally speak with each reference you provide, including at least two former supervisors.

Compensation and benefits

· Annual salary of $120,000 - $160,000 depending on experience

· Hybrid work (T-Th in office, M/F remote) after a 90-day training period

· Participation in company performance bonuses
