Controller

Overview

TBL Mission Critical provides electrical contracting, construction, and maintenance services for mission-critical facilities. The Controller leads the accounting function, overseeing financial reporting, construction job accounting, cash management, internal controls, and the accounting team.

This hands-on player-coach role requires an active CPA license, strong leadership skills, construction WIP and AR/AP experience highly preferred, and advanced QuickBooks Online proficiency. Reporting to the Director of Operations and Head of Finance, the Controller will independently lead the close, resolve accounting issues, improve processes, and partner with operations leaders on financial performance, job margins, and cash needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and deliver accurate GAAP financial statements, reconciliations, and management reporting.
• Own construction accounting, including job costing, WIP schedules, revenue recognition, retainage, change orders, and over/underbillings.
• Partner with project and operations leaders to review job performance, forecast costs, explain margin changes, and identify potential losses.
• Oversee AR, AP, project billing, cash application, payroll accounting, fixed assets, accruals, and related accounting controls.
• Maintain a reliable 13-week cash forecast and provide leadership with clear visibility into working capital, collections, and cash requirements.
• Serve as the hands-on owner of QuickBooks Online, including configuration, reconciliations, reporting, permissions, troubleshooting, and process improvements.
• Lead and develop the accounting team by establishing priorities, improving procedures, strengthening controls, and ensuring consistent execution.
• Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisers, auditors, lenders, and sureties as needed.
• Improve accounting and billing workflows through practical automation, stronger documentation, and better integration between financial and project systems.

What You Bring

• Active CPA license.
• Progressive accounting leadership experience in construction or specialty contracting.
• Strong working knowledge of construction WIP, job costing, revenue recognition, retainage, and over/underbillings.
• Recent, advanced, hands-on QuickBooks Online experience.
• Proven responsibility for financial close, reporting, AR, AP, cash management, and internal controls.
• Experience managing, coaching, and developing accounting employees in a lean, hands-on environment.
• Strong Excel, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Experience in electrical contracting, mission-critical construction, data centers, multi-state operations, certified payroll, Procore, or other construction accounting platforms is preferred. Finalists will complete a practical, job-related assessment covering construction WIP, over/underbillings, QuickBooks Online, and accounting-team leadership.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $130,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year
