Position summary

The Controller is a hands-on financial leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timely delivery of Nauticon’s accounting and financial reporting. This role directs accounting operations, payroll and benefits administration, internal controls, and financial analysis while developing the accounting team and supporting executive decision-making. The Controller will evaluate and improve upon current processes, reporting methods, technology utilization, and operating efficiencies. Position responsibilities

Lead the accounting team and manage all accounting operations, including the General Ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes, including reconciliations and preparation of the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. Key responsibilities include:

Accounts payable oversight

  • Oversee and ensure accuracy of vendor Invoice GL coding and posting
  • Review accounts payable ageing for accuracy
  • Ensure consistent, timely payments for key vendors
  • Work with Accounts Payable Specialist and vendors on invoice discrepancies or disputes

Accounts receivable oversight

  • Oversee and ensure accuracy of customer payment(s) posting
  • Review accounts receivable aging and oversee *past-due* collections process
  • Intervene with customers that are consistently past-due
  • Ensure that bank deposits are competed in timely and accurate fashion

Financial reporting, analysis, and executive decision support

  • Quarterly and monthly closing process
  • Review closing balance sheet reconciliations (Excel)
  • Prepare general ledger adjustments
  • Perform reasonableness review
  • Publish internal and external quarterly/monthly reports including benchmarking, variance analysis, and prior period comps

Lead annual year-end audit process

  • Primary interface with third party accounting/audit firm
  • Prepare year-end schedules, GL adjusting entries, and other deliverables per auditors request(s)

Oversee payroll and benefits administration, including finance-related aspects of new-hire onboarding:

  • Review payroll on bi-monthly basis
  • Calculate monthly sales commissions and email “Sales Logs” to reps & managers
  • Issue 1099s, W2s, and ACA forms
  • New hire on-boarding: interface with third party providers to run background checks and communicate results to hiring managers; ensure that all new hire paperwork is completed/signed, including all standard check-list items.
  • Benefits administration (401k, health insurance): interface with brokers/partners regarding plan updates/changes, employee status updates, etc. including scheduling group meetings, communicating plan changes, and COBRA notifications as needed.

Improvement of past practices

  • Continuously evaluate accounting workflows, approval processes, internal controls, and reporting practices to identify risks, eliminate inefficiencies, and improve accuracy, timeliness, and accountability.
  • Lead the implementation and adoption of technology solutions that strengthen internal controls, automate manual work, improve reporting, and increase accounting team productivity.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred. Relevant combinations of education, professional certifications, and accounting leadership experience will be considered
  • 3-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including experience as an Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or similar leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles
  • Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow reports
  • Experience with general ledger management, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  • Proficiency with accounting/ERP systems and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience supervising and mentoring accounting staff
  • Demonstrated ability to improve accounting processes and internal controls
  • Experience working with auditors, tax professionals, banks, and other external partners
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Team-oriented with a customer service mindset
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a small to mid-sized growing business environment
  • Experience supporting executive leadership with financial analysis and decision-making
  • Experience overseeing AP, AR, payroll, and general accounting functions
  • Curiosity and desire to understand the business from the ground-up and how the numbers come to life from the people, products, services, and activities that are the life blood of the business

Pay: $125,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
