Job Description

*This position will be designated under a hybrid work schedule and will be required to work in the ARIN Chantilly, Virginia office as needed. Please note that this is an in-house position. Relocation not provided. Any offer of employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check, including references. We are currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer who will participate in the full life cycle of software development supporting the functionality and mission of ARIN, including research, design, development, testing, debugging, maintenance, and documentation.

Job Description and Responsibilities

· Research, design, and develop, and support our customer-facing and internal web applications, web services, and other backend systems related to Whois, DNS, the routing public key infrastructure, and Internet route registry as well as billing and membership management software. Participate in our synchronized, multi-team scrum-base Agile development process, and develop and deploy Java 21+, Jakarta EE, Spring Boot, JPA, Kubernetes and other open-source software using ARIN standard practices for software development.

· Participate in requirements gathering process. Produce, contribute to and/or review project specifications, design documents, flowcharts, and diagrams. Analyze software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. Consult with customers concerning requirements, enhancements, and operation of systems.

· Consult with system operations and other engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, and operational and performance requirements of overall system.

· Design, develop, test, debug, maintain and document applications against various ARIN databases in PostgreSQL, MySQL, and other database products. Create utilities to modify records, produce statistical analysis and timely reports, and scan the database for integrity. Develop proposed relational database schemas to support application development.

· Design, develop, test, debug, maintain and document APIs for external, third-party systems or software.

· Design, develop, test, debug, maintain and document web-based systems that can operate on a variety of computer platforms and operating systems.

· Participate in code reviews of own and others’ software.

· Follow configuration management practices of ARIN including source control, coding standards and release packaging. Provide packaged releases for all application releases and bug fixes. Support Software Integration (SI) efforts.

· Research, recommend and make changes in algorithms, application code, data models, and system architecture to improve systems and/or database performance. Suggests areas for improvement in internal processes along with possible solutions.

· Mentor those with less experience through informal channels. Challenge others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model.

· Foster innovator development, training others through both formal and informal training programs.

Additional Duties

· Assist in the facilitation of team meetings. Facilitate effective team interactions.

· Seek and participate in development opportunities above and beyond training.

· Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

· Ability to travel to various locations to attend industry related conferences.

Background/Skills Required

· Bachelor’s degree preferably in an information systems or computer science related discipline OR equivalent work experience.

· 7-10 years job-related experience, including structured programming techniques, structured analysis and design and application troubleshooting and support.

· Strong proficiency in Java 17/21+ and modern enterprise application development using Jakarta EE and Spring Boot.

· Experience with Spring Data JPA, Hibernate, JPA, and relational database technologies are an absolute requirement. Knowledge of relational databases and SQL, preferably MySQL and PostgreSQL

· Demonstrated proficiency in dealing with such issues as multithreading using Java Concurrency, CompletableFuture, Virtual Threads, non-blocking, and asynchronous I/O.

· Experience designing and building RESTful APIsusing Spring MVC.

· Experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting containerized applications using Kubernetes and OpenShift, including application configuration, scaling, networking, and storage. Knowledge of object storage platforms (S3-compatible).

· Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, monitoring, logging and collaboration with platform engineering teams to build, deploy and operate containerized applications.

· Ability to understand complex instructions and work independently.

· Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate information tactfully.

· Strong verbal and written skills, including ability to deliver informative, well-organized presentations.

Background/Skills Preferred

· Familiarity of IPv4, IPv6, routing and networking issues and protocols.

· Experienced with client/server network programming (TCP/IP and UDP).

· Familiarity with the DNS protocol and its particulars.

· Master’s degree in an information systems or computer science related discipline.

Physical Requirements

· 80% of time working at a computer.
