Job Description
We are hiring a growth marketing manager to own organic growth across briefs.co, our daily newsletter, and our social channels, in office in downtown Detroit, at $110,000 to $150,000 plus profit share after year one.
Heads up before you apply. This role takes two steps, applying here and sending us a short video. Details are at the bottom of this posting. It takes about five minutes and we promise, it's worth it.
For most of history, serious investment research was for people who already had money. Briefs Finance is changing that. We built one of the top five financial podcasts in the world, then we built the research and tools that let a regular person understand an investment in minutes, and we are making it easy to invest intelligently with AI tools that actually work.
We have the audience and we have the product. What we have never had is one person whose entire job is turning that audience into leads. We think this is some of the most exciting work happening in Detroit, and we're delivering things that even Silicon Valley hasn't even figured out.
We're hiring a full time Growth Marketing Manager to own organic growth end to end. The website, the newsletter, and our social channels, all pointed at one number. If your last job was managing paid budgets and reporting on somebody else's channel, this isn't that. Here the channel is yours, and nobody hands you a plan.
What you'll own
- The website. Roughly 100 articles a day live on briefs.co. You own the strategy for what gets found, how it gets found, and where that traffic lands. Search is not one thing anymore. Traditional SEO still matters, and so does getting cited by the AI tools people now ask instead of Google.
- Market Briefs. Our daily newsletter goes out to hundreds of thousands of investors every weekday at 7:30 am ET. You own list growth, the referral program, and every path that gets a reader onto that list in the first place.
- Social. Our company channels, and the strategy for what we put on them. Not the posting itself, the data-driven plan behind it and the honest read on what actually brings people back.
- Referral campaigns. This is yours to build, not to inherit.
- The handoff to paid acquisition. You work hand in hand with the person running paid acquisition, because organic and paid should not be two separate strategies that meet once a quarter. What you learn organically should make paid cheaper, and the other way around.
- Experiments. If you can defend it, give it a shot. Most of them will fail. The ones that work get scaled the same week.
- AI. You use it every day and you push what we do with it further every month. We don't believe in AI slop, but we do believe in using the tools we have to move faster than a team our size should be able to.
- Leads. This is the number you're focused on. Not just clicks, not impressions, not follower count. Every surface you touch is measured on the leads it produces.
What you don't own
You are not writing the articles, writing the newsletter, or posting to social. Editorial and social have their own people and their own numbers. You set the strategy, you bring them the data on what is working, and you win by making their work reach more people. If what you actually want is to be the one writing, look at our Senior Financial Editor posting instead. It is a good job and it is not this one.
Who you are
- You have actually done this. Three to five years is the sweet spot. We are not looking for fifteen years of strategy decks, we are looking for somebody who has been in the game and can walk us through your results.
- You know search the way it works now. SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO). If you have not thought about how your work shows up inside an AI answer, you are already behind on this one.
- You know email marketing. Not just sending campaigns, but also growing a list and keeping it healthy.
- You understand how a sales model works. You know what a lead is worth, what happens to it after you hand it over, and why a bigger number of worse leads is not a win.
- You use AI every day and you are honest about what it is good at (a lot). At the same time, you are honest about what it isn't great at (also a lot). Claude, ChatGPT, n8n, whatever gets the job done. You can build a repeatable workflow, not just type a prompt.
- You move at a pace that surprises people. Work we assumed would take us a quarter has been successfully delivered here in three days, with the tests already running before anybody asked for them. That is the bar, and if it sounds exhausting rather than fun, this isn't the seat.
- You write things down. What you tried, what it did, what you learned when it didn't work. You raise problems before they become missed numbers, with specifics.
- You own your asset. Nobody has to tell you traffic is soft. When something works you are already scaling it, and when something is broken you say so and then fix it anyway.
- You don't have to be a financial expert, but you do need to be genuinely interested in money and markets. Our audience can tell when somebody isn't.
- Nice to have, but not required. GA4, Ahrefs or Semrush, HubSpot, Customer.io, and any real experience growing a media or newsletter audience rather than a software product.
Your first 90 days
- Week one and two. You learn the product from the inside, the way a reader does. Market Briefs every morning, Briefs Pro the way a subscriber would use it, the podcast, the site. Then you come back with the list of every place we lose somebody between finding us and giving us their email.
- Day 30. You know where every lead we get today actually comes from, and you have written down the honest baseline for each surface. This has never been done here at 100% accuracy. Expect the first version to be uglier than anyone wants.
- Day 60. The referral program is live, one experiment a week is a habit rather than a plan, and you have shipped at least one change to the site that moved a number you can point at.
- Day 90. You have answered the question nobody here has perfectly answered yet. Which surface produces leads that actually convert, and are we spending our effort in the right place? Then you move the effort.
You will report to our Head of Operations. You will work hand in hand with the person running paid acquisition, and closely with editorial and social, who execute against the strategy you set. Our CEO cares a great deal about this seat and will tell you exactly what he thinks. This is a hands-on job and not a management one. There is nobody under you today.
Where and when
This is an in-person role in our office in the heart of Detroit's business district. We promise, it's worth it. We are very flexible when life happens, the AC goes out or the kid is home sick, but if you are looking for a fully remote or hybrid job, this isn't it. Monday through Friday. The newsletter goes out at 7:30 am ET and the market opens at 9:30, so the day starts early here.
We are a startup
That means there are certain characteristics you should be aware of prior to applying.
Some of the biggest benefits of working for a startup include
- Being an early member of a fast-growing team
- Seeing the impact of your work
- Opportunity for greater financial growth
But working for a startup is not easy. Some of the requirements of working for a startup include:
- Working long hours
- Enduring company pivots
- Making personal sacrifices when needed
Three things we expect from everybody here. Lead by example, because we teach people about money and we expect our own team to live that way. Care about the work, because if you are looking for a job rather than something you want to be good at, this will not be a fit. And take risks, because you will be asked to try things nobody here has tried yet.
About Briefs Finance
We are on a mission to help 1.3 billion people be better with money. We do it through a top-five financial podcast, a free daily newsletter called Market Briefs, a paid research and education platform called Briefs Pro, and AI-powered stock research tools. Learn more at https://www.briefs.co and on our social media pages.
How much will I get paid?
We pay at the top of the market on purpose, because we want the person who takes this seat to stay in it. Salary is $110,000 to $150,000 depending on what you have actually built before. The top of that range is for somebody who can point at a number they moved and explain exactly how.
Then there is the profit share. Most of our team is invited into the company profit share after their first year. It is not guaranteed, and it has trended upward, moving with how the company does, but it has typically paid somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 a quarter, and there is no ceiling on it.
How to apply
Two things. Apply here, and send us a video. One without the other doesn't get an interview, and that isn't us being difficult, it's the whole point.
Here's why. We get far more applications than we can interview and on paper most of them look the same. Same tools listed, same cover letter, same claims about driving growth. Three minutes of you talking tells us more than a resume does.
What we need from you
- Record a video, three minutes or less. Tell us why you'd be good at this job, and one thing you'd change about how briefs.co or Market Briefs grows, after spending a little time with both. You don't have to be right about the change. We want to hear how you think.
- Put it anywhere we can watch it. Google Drive, Dropbox, or an unlisted YouTube link all work. Check that the link opens before you send it.
- Email the link to hello@briefs.co with the subject line Growth Marketing Manager - Video Submission, and include one example of growth you drove, with the numbers before and after.
Your phone camera is fine. So is your kitchen, one take, and whatever you're wearing right now. We are not judging the video, we're listening to you. Figure twenty minutes start to finish, including the time you spend looking around the website.
