Position Overview

EARTHDAY.ORG is seeking a strategic, creative, and digitally fluent Chief Marketing Officer to lead the organization’s global marketing strategy, brand, audience growth, and promotion of its programs and campaigns. The CMO will oversee an integrated approach across brand, digital, website, email, social media, advertising, content, partnerships, and emerging media, translating EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission into campaigns that drive awareness, participation, action, advocacy, and support.

Leading a seven-person marketing and communications team and reporting to the EDO President. The CMO will oversee marketing for major initiatives including The Canopy Project, 22 Minutes, Earth Day Live, the multiyear Earth Day Global Food Campaign, the Global Education Campaign, and the Fashion Campaign, as well as Earth Day and emerging initiatives.

Working closely with the VP of Fundraising, the CMO will strengthen supporter and donor engagement and align marketing and fundraising priorities. The CMO will also lead AI-driven marketing innovation, identifying and implementing AI tools to improve fundraising, content development, audience tracking and insights, advertising, and campaign performance. This leader will stay current on and implement relevant advances in AI, automation, personalization, and emerging technologies to increase the effectiveness and scale of EARTHDAY.ORG’s marketing while protecting accuracy, privacy, brand integrity, and public trust.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy & Leadership

  • Lead an integrated global marketing strategy aligned with EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission, programs, campaigns, fundraising priorities, and organizational goals.
  • AI driven marketing innovation. Identify and implement AI tools to improve fundraising, content, tracking, advertising and campaign goals.
  • Develop annual and campaign-specific plans, budgets, timelines, performance goals, and workflows.
  • Build a cohesive approach across brand, digital, content, social media, email, website, advertising, partnerships, and emerging media.
  • Develop audience strategies that expand awareness, participation, engagement, advocacy, fundraising, and support across generations, geographies, cultures, and sectors.
  • Establish measurable goals and use analytics, audience insights, experimentation, and technology to continually improve performance.

Brand, Content & Campaign Marketing

  • Own and evolve EARTHDAY.ORG’s brand positioning, voice, messaging, and visual identity.
  • Translate complex environmental issues into accessible, compelling, action-oriented stories for diverse audiences.
  • Lead integrated marketing for EARTHDAY.ORG’s portfolio of programs, campaigns, events, and initiatives.
  • Develop differentiated positioning, messaging, calls to action, audience journeys, and promotional strategies for priority audiences.
  • Oversee content and social media strategy, including video, podcasts, creators, influencers, user-generated content, and emerging platforms.
  • Partner with program and communications teams to turn subject-matter expertise, stories, data, milestones, and partnerships into compelling campaigns and scalable content.

Digital, Website, Email & Audience Growth

  • Lead digital marketing and online audience growth, with the website serving as a core storytelling, education, engagement, and conversion platform.
  • Improve website traffic, user experience, accessibility, search visibility, engagement, conversion, and program participation.
  • Lead strategies for SEO and emerging AI-driven search and discovery.
  • Oversee email strategy, newsletters, campaign communications, segmentation, personalization, automation, and lifecycle engagement.
  • Grow EARTHDAY.ORG’s first-party audiences and strengthen supporter journeys from initial engagement through participation, advocacy, volunteering, and giving.
  • Use analytics, attribution, testing, and conversion data to continually optimize performance.

Campaigns, Advertising & Marketing Innovation

  • Lead integrated paid, owned, earned, social, email, partner, creator, and community campaigns.
  • Oversee audience targeting, creative development, media strategy, budgets, testing, optimization, and reporting.
  • Establish a culture of experimentation through A/B testing, audience testing, creative testing, and conversion optimization.
  • Identify and responsibly implement AI and automation tools that improve creativity, efficiency, personalization, audience understanding, campaign performance, and scale.
  • Stay current on developments in generative AI, AI search, social discovery, digital advertising, marketing automation, emerging platforms, and changing audience behavior.
  • Ensure technology enhances rather than replaces human judgment, creativity, editorial standards, and EARTHDAY.ORG’s authentic voice.

Communications & Fundraising

  • Provide strategic oversight to ensure marketing and communications operate as a cohesive function with consistent messaging and positioning.
  • Collaborate with leadership, communications, and program teams on major announcements, campaigns, partnerships, events, thought leadership, and organizational priorities.
  • Work closely with the VP of Fundraising on donor acquisition, stewardship, appeals, audience segmentation, digital acquisition, and supporter engagement.
  • Develop strategies that convert audiences into donors and deepen relationships with supporters, advocates, volunteers, partners, and participants.
  • Use marketing data and audience insights to strengthen donor acquisition, retention, reactivation, and engagement.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in marketing, communications, brand management, digital marketing, or a related field, including significant leadership of integrated marketing programs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing organization-wide marketing strategy and managing multiple programs, campaigns, or initiatives.
  • Strong expertise across brand, digital marketing, email, social media, websites, advertising, content, audience development, and integrated campaigns.
  • Demonstrated success building audiences, strengthening engagement, and using positioning, segmentation, and conversion strategies to drive measurable results.
  • Experience using AI and emerging technologies in marketing, including generative AI, personalization, analytics, automation, search, or campaign optimization, with an understanding of responsible use and human oversight.
  • Experience with analytics, CRM, marketing automation, email, advertising, CMS/web, and social media platforms, as well as SEO and evolving AI-driven search.
  • Experience working with fundraising, development, revenue, membership, or supporter-engagement teams is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, project management, written, verbal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience leading teams and managing agencies, consultants, vendors, or creative partners.
