Backup Systems Engineer

Job Summary

Backup Systems Engineer to support NIWC Pacific at the Old Town Campus in San Diego. This is an onsite position and remote candidates are not being considered. Current delivery requires at least two days per week onsite and may expand at the client’s direction. Resumes are needed by October 2, 2026.

You will design, deploy, document, and improve enterprise backup solutions supporting Navy mission systems, with primary responsibility for Commvault.

What You Will Do

• Design data protection strategies for mission workloads using Commvault.
• Develop hardened installation and configuration procedures aligned with Navy standards.
• Administer CommCell, Media Agents, deduplication, encryption, and air-gap or immutable backup controls.
• Support backup and restore workflows across Windows Server and VMware vSphere environments.
• Automate routine work and operational checks with PowerShell.
• Troubleshoot backup, storage, network, and recovery issues in production.
• Work with architects, engineers, and workload owners to select the right protection strategy.
• Maintain runbooks, SOPs, architecture diagrams, training materials, and operational metrics.
• Support planned OCONUS travel, generally one to three weeks per trip and up to three trips per year.

Required Qualifications

• Eight or more years developing and administering enterprise backup platforms, with primary Commvault experience.
• Five or more years supporting production Windows Server networks, including Active Directory, DNS/DHCP, VSS, and storage services.
• Two or more years operating VMware vSphere, including ESXi, vCenter, snapshots, CBT, and application-consistent backup and restore workflows.
• Two or more years using PowerShell for automation and operational tooling.
• Hands-on Commvault and/or Rubrik administration at scale across multiple sites, tenants, or workload types.
• Working knowledge of routing, VLANs, firewalls, and secure backup data flows.
• Experience writing runbooks, SOPs, architecture diagrams, and operational metrics.
• Active Secret clearance or higher.
• IAT Level II compliance, including an approved IA certification such as Security+ CE and an operating-environment certification.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to work onsite in San Diego and complete planned OCONUS travel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commvault Professional or Master certification.
• VMware VCP-DCV and Site Recovery or disaster-recovery runbook experience.
• Microsoft Windows Server or Hybrid Administrator certification.
• CISSP or SSCP.
• Experience with NetApp, Dell/EMC, Pure, SAN/NAS, tape libraries, and key management.
• Cloud backup integrations with Azure, AWS, or object storage.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.

Compensation

$115,000 to $135,000 per year. The target range is $115,000 to $120,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
